(Informal) conversations have long been devalued, especially those of women. Even though the term gossip is derived from the old english godsibb which meant a close female friend. Godsibbs were connected by a kinship of trust in which they were able to share their true thoughts and feelings and support each other, free from the restrictive expectations of patriarchal societies. The same principle is repeated in other languages: commérage (French), dedikodu (Turkish) or Klatsch (German) have a negative connotation despite their sociability. This research project reflects on gossiping as an urban spatial practice and reclaims its value as bottom-up agent for community weaving, transformation, and resistance. The GOSSIP project was started in late 2020 by fem_arc. It’s funded by Fonds Soziokultur and Berlin's Senate Department for Culture and Europe.

What do we know about what's going on with Munich's Kreativquartier?

How freely can you move in spaces?

How do womxn use spaces that are not made for them?

during first deep lock down we went for a trip to a historic city normally very touristic. It was ten days until the lock down should end. Just coffee places had open windows. After cruising this city with my family we went to the city information to ask if they are public toilets open, I was pregnant my friend has menstruation. the lady told us the public restroom is gonna be open after lock down will end 🤦‍♀️. It was impossible to find a spot in the city to use for us, just for our boyfriends… in the end we waited until the gas station but it was approximately hour…
Warum?
Exclusion. Difficulties. Challenges. Exhaustion. Verrenkungen. Spagate. Pressure. They require different logistics and preparation. Discrimination.
When I walked in Weißensee with my hijab on I felt like me being there I was already agitating the space. I as an Arab woman am already non neutral in a way but I’m less threatening without hijab. But with hijab, people are looking at me a lot different.

Where do you gossip and with whom?

Na, mit denen aus dem Späti…
Mit Dir!

What role does gossip play in cities?

All of us, like maybe have like a piece of information by our own experience of something, then if you share it, you construct like a whole picture. Like you are creating something from little pieces around.

When is gossip useful to you?

Dedıkodu yapmak, bana bir aitlik duygusu veriyor
sometimes it's about seeking support I think. I can imagine, if one customer is super rude and behaving in a very unpleasant way, and I took it personal, and if I talk with other people about this experience and this specific person. And if the other person tells me no it's to everyone... Because for me, I sometimes can imagine that okay maybe because I'm not german, I'm not european, I'm not white, so they treat me differently... It's like if I tell other people what happened to me, and if other people experienced the same, and then I would not take it personally, then it's a big help for me.
for a better understanding of what is happening around me

What is gossip really about?

Vielleicht um ein Miteinander?
